Eng lays out plan to eliminate MBTA slow zones by end of 2024

Taking aim at an issue that has plagued service for eight months, MBTA General Manager Phil Eng on Thursday rolled out a comprehensive plan to repair tracks across the system and lift all speed restrictions by the end of 2024.The proposal would deploy nearly two dozen multi-day closures of segments on each of the four subway lines over the next 13 months, ranging in duration from four days to 21 days.Implementing that many closures would represent an unprecedented level of disruption, but it also reflects far more advance notice than MBTA officials have provided to riders in recent years and puts an estimated endpoint on the stretches of slow travel that have hamstrung travel.Altogether, the plan involves 19 days of proposed diversions in November and December, then 188 days of proposed diversions in 2024 to lift all speed restrictions that currently blanket about 23% of the system. Authorities search for Jan. 6 attack suspect who fled as FBI approached

(AP) — Authorities were searching a central New Jersey neighborhood Thursday for a suspect in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol who fled as FBI agents approached his home.The FBI said it and other law enforcement agencies are looking for Gregory Yetman, who it said is “wanted in connection with the January 6th attack on the US Capitol.” It was not immediately clear what charges he faces in connection with the attack.“We will be in the area staging until Yetman is arrested,” the FBI’s Newark office said in a statement Thursday morning. MONTREAL — The president of Concordia University in Montreal is condemning the recent violence on campus linked to the Israel-Hamas war.Graham Carr says in a message to members of the university community that three separate acts of violence or intimidation occurred at the university Wednesday.Carr says two security guards and a student were injured in an altercation, swastikas were found on a university building, and a social media post from a student group could reasonably be interpreted as inciting violence. He says he is saddened and disgusted by these acts and that the university will work to identify those responsible. Montreal police say a 22-year-old woman was arrested at the university in connection with the altercation and released with a citation.Const. (AP) — Parks and schools were closed Thursday in a Southern California city after officials found asbestos in the charred debris of an historic World War II-era blimp hangar.The city of Tustin closed at least nine parks and urged residents to limit outdoor activities to reduce their exposure to ash after asbestos was detected in preliminary samples of ash and debris. Schools were closed Thursday to ensure student safety in the Tustin Unified School District some 35 miles (56 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles. A Veteran’s Day event planned for Saturday was canceled.The blaze broke out early Tuesday at the massive wooden hangar, which was one of two built in 1942 by the U.S. Navy to house military blimps.
