Minnesota regulators knew four months ago that radioactive waste had leaked from a nuclear power plant in Monticello — but they didn’t announce anything about the leak until this week.The delay in notifying the public about the November leak raised questions about public safety and transparency, but industry experts said Friday there was never a public health threat. They said Xcel Energy voluntarily notified state agencies and reported the leak of tritium to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission soon after it was confirmed and that the leak of 400,000 gallons (1.5 million liters) of radioactive water never reached a threshold that would have required public notification.“This is something that we struggle with because there is such concern with anything that is nuclear,” said Victoria Mitlyng, a spokesperson with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. “The concern is very, very understandable. After getting knocked out in the third round of last year’s Boston spelling bee, Tanoshi Inomata cut out his face from a photo taken of him competing and placed it on a picture of the winning contestant.“I wanted to win this year,” Tanoshi said.Calm, cool and collected, the determined fourth-grader at Allston’s Winship Elementary School accomplished his goal on Saturday. (AP) — Prosecutors plan next week to release the video that led authorities in Virginia to charge seven deputies and three state mental hospital employees with second-degree murder in the death of a handcuffed and shackled man.The family of Irvo Otieno saw the video of his death Thursday. The Canadian Beatbox Championships returned earlier this month after being on hiatus since 2019.On March 11th Beatboxers from across the country took part in a battle of sounds at the Rec Room in Toronto. This year’s categories were Solo, Tag Team and Loopstations beatboxing.“I think that was the best part. To have the whole community back together again,” says Vancouver’s Vino Cuenca, one of this year’s champions.Cuenca, who defended his 2019 title, will represent Canada on the world stage at the Beatbox Battle World Championship in Berlin, Germany this summer.Scott Jackson, a former winner of this competition and host of this year’s show, showed Stella Acquisto a few beatboxing tricks. Slain officers’ families will get $100K from Heroes’ Fund, Alberta premier says

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says the families of two Edmonton police officers who were fatally shot this week are each to receive $100,000 from the province’s Heroes’ Fund.Smith made the announcement Saturday during her weekly provincewide radio program while addressing the deaths of Const. Brett Ryan and Const.
